What to Expect: SEL, sibling relationships, jealousy, sharing, family, emotional growth.
Relatable and supportive, this picture book helps readers explore the familiar feelings of jealousy and insecurity that come with a new sibling’s introduction to the family.
Munchkin is a gentle, shy, kind kitten who loves her life with Mama and Papa. But when Mama and Papa bring home a new sister, Buttercup the Dog, Munchkin is not happy at all. Buttercup doesn’t look like her or like Mama and Papa. Buttercup is big, and noisy, and she licks. Buttercup plays with Munchkin’s toys, takes her cuddles, and even gets fed first! After only a short time with Buttercup as her sister, Munchkin isn’t a kind kitten anymore—now she’s an angry, jealous kitten! Perhaps Mama and Papa love Buttercup more than they love her? It will take some wise words from Papa to help Munchkin see that being a big sister might not be so bad after all…
Munchkin is kind at heart but overwhelmed by her emotions, and readers are sure to relate to both her hurt feelings and the loud outburst they trigger. As well as being inclusive, the cross-species family provides a mirror for blended and adoptive families as well, allowing for a diverse reading of Munchkin’s sibling troubles. The story is delivered through plain, present-tense prose and direct dialogue, perfect for out-loud reading that contrasts the adult and child voices, helping readers identify more closely with Munchkin herself.
With its validation of young readers’ strong feelings and its happy ending, The Jealous Little Munchkin is perfect for any young reader adjusting to a new sibling and the emotions that it brings.
