    Merry Christmas, Eve!

    Written by Adam Wallace

    Illustrated by Lena Bardy

    Ages 4+ | 36 Pages

Publisher: Krueger Wallace Press & Riven Rock Projects | ISBN-13: 9780648973737

What to Expect: Christmas spirit, freedom, fun.

Celebrating both determination and the power of play, Merry Christmas, Eve! is an inspiring tale.

Christmas is supposed to be about fun, togetherness, and joy but for the elves who have to make presents for 2 billion children, there’s no time for fun or merriment. The Head Elf has made strict rules: no playing, no laughing, no chatting—even the reindeer have to fly in straight lines!

As the elves and reindeer become more and more dispirited, Eve realizes she has to do something to save Christmas from the power-hungry Head Elf. If only she could set the spirit of Christmas free! Unfortunately, the Head Elf has locked it away in a heavily guarded box. With bravery and determination (and some help from imaginary kittens), Eve sets out to find and free the Christmas spirit before Christmas is ruined forever.

In this clever story, Wallace illustrates the dangers of seeking too much control, showing readers that fun and joy often mean being willing to let go for a while. Celebrating both determination and the power of play, it’s an inspiring tale. The use of humor and bouncy, rhyming text underscores the author’s emphasis on playfulness, inviting readers to join in the fun, while colorful cartoon-style illustrations add fun details for readers to notice (like the gingerbread men who flit across the pages, delivering mugs of hot chocolate to the overworked elves).

Overall, Merry Christmas, Eve! is an enjoyable and inspiring choice for a secular Christmas read.
