What to Expect: Photography and Global Travel

Opening with the line, “This book is dedicated to the next generation of young trailblazers, dreamers and problem solvers,” Moment provides a photographic journey exploring childhood in all its forms across the globe.

After an introduction that challenges readers to be advocates for “social, environmental, economic and racial issues,” the volume presents readers with over 100 images of places, faces, natural environments, and young people from around the world, interspersed with inspirational quotes from proverbs, history, and literature. From children walking to school in Odisha, India, to those standing behind barred gates in Havana, Cuba, or taking part in the March for Life Protest in Los Angeles, these photographs tell a rich and vibrant story about youth in our world today.

A key strength of Moment is how it educates without being preachy or pedantic. Although the volume contains some truly powerful messages about heritage, freedom, children’s agency, and our human impact on the natural world, these messages are delivered through emotive images, allowing readers to interpret and critique for themselves. Even in the introduction, the author’s message for children is delivered not through his words, but through the words of his two young daughters in interview form. In his opening statement, Abad describes the purpose of the book as being “to embolden and empower our youth to meet the many challenges they’ll face throughout their lives.” In this beautifully presented volume, this goal is most definitely realized.
