One of our dogs is a beagle mix. I can relate. She is mischievous, a con artist, an escape artist, a thief, amusing and very lovable. The grandchildren adore her and makes them laugh with her antics. I would love to read this book with them.

Our dog didn’t know about when daylight saving time started. He would wait at the door at the usual time for Dad to come home and could not be persuaded otherwise.

My Oreo drives me crazy sometimes. You have to pick him up every time he wants to get on the sofa or bed with you. He knows how to jump up but rather you pick him up instead. He will whine until you pick him up and put him in his spot , but I couldn’t imagine life without him!

We have a mini horse, Huck, who drives us crazy but we love him (sometimes reluctantly. He is such a pill! He teases the other animals. He kicks things over, just for the fun of it. He grabs mouthfuls of hay on his way out the barn door in the morning, even when he knows there is a big pile of field grass (much better and tastier) waiting for him outside, simply because he knows he is not supposed to do it. He is naughty for the fun of it. But he is also cute, and attached to us in a sweet way–runs to greet our niece when she visits, chuckles when he sees us at night. So, yes. He drives us crazy but I wouldn’t trade him for a less aggravating horse.

My aunt’s pug, Shelby, was a mischievous little guy. He got into lots of trouble and he led the other pugs into wild schemes to escape, or dig things up, or just race around the house in glee. He was my favorite of all of her dogs, and when he died my aunt called me, crying, knowing that I would grieve for him as much as she did because we both had a soft spot for the naughty boys.

Today’s exasperating pet is our cat Edmund, who likes to race into the bathroom and hide in the linen closet. He falls asleep there, doesn’t answer when we call for him, no matter how frantic we (I, mostly) become. Eventually, when he gets hungry, he wanders out, with an attitude like, “What’s the big deal?”

Today my goat, Oscar, and I had a lively debate about whether he should listen to me and untangle himself from the fence and go back to where he belonged. I told him what to do and he bleated back at me. This back and forth happened four or five times. I won the argument but I am not sure Oscar was convinced I was right. He is a funny boy and I love him.

How is it that I’ve had so many pets who have driven us crazy? How about our little cat Buckwheat? She weighed about six pounds, and she was the boss of my dad. Every night she told him when it was time to come to bed–she made him turn the tv off, despite his protestations that he wanted to stay up and watch “Walker, Texas Ranger” reruns, and go to bed because she was lonely and it was time, it was 11:30 pm and she had decided that was his bedtime and she didn’t care if he was a night owl, she was not. And my stubborn dad, who never let anyone tell him what to do–whose catch phrase might as well have been, “You got that stubbornness from me, you’ll never be more stubborn than me” when I was growing up–meekly obeyed that little cat. And it made him so happy, because he knew that he was indispensable to her, that her insistence on having him come to bed was a sign of her love for him.
