Ode to a Pug: Book Cover

    Ode to a Pug

    Written by Jill Rosen

    Illustrated by Stephanie Rohr

    Ages 5+ | 32 Pages

    Publisher: AM Ink Publishing (2024) ISBN-13: 978-1-958842-24-9

What to Expect: Animals, pets, family, learning, and emotional regulation.

Told from the point of view of the exasperated parent, Ode to A Pug is a story about the love that exists between family members, who would never give each other up no matter how annoying, disgusting, or infuriating they might find each other.

A pug is a pretty delightful pet to share your home with—but they can be downright exasperating, too. Pugs mommy sometimes wonders why she puts up with him. From stinky farts, drool, and fur shed all over the house to shredded furniture, “accidents” on the floor and chewed-up clothes, Pug creates mess and destruction wherever he goes. He races and zooms around, attacks shoelaces, eats rocks, and generally drives its mommy mad. Will today be the day she gives Pug away? No, of course not. Cuteness, cuddles, and clownish companionship make it all worthwhile. After all, Pug is family!

The simple rhyming text adds humor while gently helping young readers understand the vexation they might sometimes cause their parents. Notably, the story emphasizes the idea that even when parents (or pet owners) are annoyed, they are still loving. The cartoon-style artwork highlights the antics of the Pug and the emotions of his mommy through funny facial expressions and lots of movement, adding to the humor of the story, and readers are sure to empathize with the mischief-loving character of the Pug himself.

Ode to a Pug is a sweet and funny exploration of what unconditional love looks like.
