    A brown horseQuincy and Buck

Story by Camille Matthews; Illustrations by Michelle Black

    Paperback: 40 pages

    Age Range: 5-8

Publisher: Pathfinder Equine Publications (March 15, 2014)

    ISBN-13: 978-0981924045

What to expect: Horses, Relationships, Bullying, Trail Riding

Quincy and Buck is the third stand-alone story in the “Quincy the Horse” series. Quincy is a beautiful red American Quarter Horse with a long white blaze on his nose. He’s gentle and sweet, but a little on the nervous side—especially when his owner, Cam, takes him on his first trail ride in the desert where “ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN!”

Although afraid of the wild animals that may be encountered on a desert trail, Quincy takes some advice from his wise horse friend Beau who resides in the stall next to him. Beau advises, “It helps to follow an experienced horse.” Unfortunately, the experienced horse that Cam’s friend Cathy is riding—also an American Quarter Horse—is not friendly at all, in fact, he is a bully that goes as far as kicking at Quincy when he stumbles on the trail. Matthews’ writing is explanatory and guides readers calmly through Quincy’s experience and leads them to an ending of happy resolution. She also does a lovely job with her descriptions of the scenery and her words combined with the illustrator’s paintings blend incredibly well together to create a relatable experience.

This is a lovely picture book that showcases the skills of asking for help, facing fears and harnessing inner bravery. Quincy and Buck is a great trail riding adventure for horse lovers and provides a wonderful opportunity to open up dialogue about bullying with kids ages 5 though 8.
