The Adventures of Squishy and Boo: On the Wild Side

    Written by K L Thompson

    Illustrated by Anna Smith

    Ages: 4-6 | 27 Pages

    Publisher: Wheatmark Publishing (2023) | ISBN-13: 979-8-88-747-137-2

What to Expect: Family, adventure, and jungle animals.

From the characteristics of jungle animals to the importance of embracing change with curiosity and imagination, there is lots to learn from this picture book, The Adventures of Squishy and Boo: On the Wild Side.

Squishy and Boo love spending their days playing with each other. One day, however, they feel a little bit wild—and their games turn wild, too! Before their eyes, the living room transforms into a jungle, and Squishy and Boo become, in turn, a pair of hairy lion cubs, powerful pythons, huge elephants, playful monkeys, and regal owls. It’s a bit unsettling at first, being something different from what they are used to. Luckily, their mom is at their side the whole way, transforming alongside them and never losing her cool. With her to protect them, what could go wrong?

Squishy and Boo are likable characters, and readers will love their fertile imaginations and the bond between mother and children that the story depicts. Light-filled illustrations in earthy tones calm the tone and underscore the happy ending to come, while the jaunty rhyming text and font effects make the story easy to follow for listeners and readers alike.

On the Wild Side is a fun and reassuring celebration of motherly love and childish adventure.

    About the Author

On the Wild Side is the debut children’s book written by K. L. Thompson. Thompson has been writing stories for longer than she will admit. Only since having children and encouraging them to chase their dreams, has she decided to chase one of her own.

    K. L. lives in Arizona where she helps to run a family business, is a wife and mother, and loves spending time with family and friends. She also loves reading and collecting books. On the Wild Side is the first book in The Adventures of Squishy and Boo series—named after her two little ones. She hopes you will love the message in this story and that your children will have fun on the adventure.
