Book CoverThe Adventurous Book of Adventure: What Happens When Kids Fall in a Hole by J. Zelen is a funny and exciting novel for all ages. It stars a girl named Lucy Green who, tired of her “boring” life, accidentally embarks on a huge adventure when she and her cousin Jessica find a hole in the ground and fall in it. Passing through a tunnel at the bottom of the hole, they unknowingly enter a whole world separate from our own. On the other side, the girls are kidnapped by a spooky villain and locked in a dragon’s castle. However, they don’t wait around to be rescued, but instead set out to prove that kindness and resourcefulness go a long way.

The two heroines aren’t the only clever kids in the book: a whole group of their siblings and neighbors, together with their faithful dogs, begin to unravel the mystery of where the girls have gone. They have no clue as to the extent of the journey they’ll end up making, but they bravely start off on foot anyway, with one goal in mind- to save the girls.

The story is told by each character in turn as they travel through this strange other world in search of their lost family members. They meet a whole host of wonderful characters, some human, many not quite, on the road to the dragon’s castle. The villains are both scary and funny, but in keeping with a book aimed at young readers, there is no real violence, just suspense and many close calls that make it a real page turner.

In fitting with a children’s book, the kids make it home in one piece, but the reader will never guess who steps up to save the day. You’ll just have to read the book!
