    • ALOHA TOWER For 34 years this 10-story lighthouse was Hawaii’s tallest building and its clock was one of the U.S.’s largest.
    • BUDDAH’S BIRTHDAY Is celebrated every April 8th to honor the sage who taught compassion and tolerance.
    • HALAKAHIKI (PINEAPPLE) are grown year-round and planted by hand, by burying the crown of the fruit into the earth turned red by volcanic ash.
    • HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL The highly endangered state mammal dives for a meal of fish and spiny lobsters in remote coral reefs.
    • HAWAIIAN PIDGIN The country’s unofficial language is a mix of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and languages from other immigrants groups.
    • HULA DANCING uses hand motions to tell a story and represent nature, like a tree in the breeze, or an emotion, such as fondness.
    • MOANALUA GARDENS Home to the Hitachi Tree, a 130-year-old monkeypod tree whose branches cover 120 feet.

    Gabrielle Balkan comes from a family of book-loving teachers and is passionate about literacy, education, and good stories – just as her people taught her to be. She’s made good on her degree in education by working in children’s publishing and related education fields for some 15 years. Gabrielle grew up across from the Indiana State Fair and now lives in Brooklyn with her writer-husband, twins, and orange cat.Illustrator Sol Linero lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her clients include Scholastic, Oprah magazine, Jamie Oliver Magazine and Wired.
