Flying Circus Through Thick and Thin

    Written by Leona Cobham

    Illustrated by Timothy O’Brien

    Ages 7+ | 144 Pages

    Publisher: Cobham Wings | ISBN-13: 9781739407032

What to Expect: Aviation, history, friendship, problem-solving, and teamwork.

In book 2 of the Airplane Adventures series, readers will watch the four friends learn more about themselves and the qualities that make real heroes as they struggle to overcome their weaknesses and put their strengths to work for the greater good.

The four friends of the flying circus are back for three new adventures, pitting their unique talents and exceptional teamwork against human and natural threats. High in the mountains, Val, Spif, Woody, and Tom uncover an illegal mine that has been poisoning the villagers with radiation—and make a sparky new friend. Back at home in England, Val, Woody, and Tom learn an essential lesson about what can be learned from history when a case of mistaken hats nearly upsets a commemorative celebration. And finally, the friends learn humility when a forest fire leaves them stranded—they discover it’s okay to make mistakes.

Each of the four main airplane protagonists is an endearing blend of heroic and flawed, and readers will enjoy laughing as they get into comical entanglement even as they bravely face more severe weather threats, hostile enemies, and gunfire. What makes these stories truly unique, however, is the detailed and accurate aviation history and technical knowledge woven through the stories. Alongside black-and-white artwork with a charmingly vintage feel, diagrams help readers understand complex information, from the functions of different airplane parts to the landing path flown by planes approaching a runway. Key terminology is bolded throughout the book and explained thoroughly in a comprehensive glossary at the end.

Flying Circus Through Thick and Thin is a delightful collection of adventures perfect for budding engineers and airplane enthusiasts.

    About the Author

Leona was immersed in the world of aviation from a young age; her grandfather, Sir Alan Cobham, made many first-time flights as well as pioneering the invention of air-to-air refueling. Leona absorbed this love of flying and travel. While working in a forest recuperation project in Brazil, Leona volunteered to teach in a shanty town. Here, a lifelong interest in understanding different learning styles began. On return to the UK, she began to write children’s fiction and worked part-time as a classroom reading assistant. Believing happy children learn best, Leona infuses her writing with humor, adventure, and a big feel-good factor. Her endearing characters overcome personal as well as technical challenges to succeed.
