    BeeBop: The Honeybee Wannabee Hero

    Written by James D. Bell

    Illustrated by Wacky World Studio

    Ages 5+ | 70 Pages

    Publisher: James D. Bell | ISBN-13: 9798846879508

What to Expect: Family, orphans, loyalty, bravery, belonging, and bullying.

In this lovely story about belonging and finding your place, gentle humor mixes with tense adventure and a coming-of-age tale that readers will surely be gripped by.

When a bear destroys his hive, BeeBop is the sole survivor. He is given a second chance at life when the Queen of a neighboring hive decides to take him in, but despite having the love of the Queen, BeeBop is far from popular in his new hive. The other bees see him as an outsider and an intruder and tell him he’ll never amount to much. BeeBop is desperate to be accepted in his new home, but how can he when he is so small and unimportant? Then comes his big chance: the hive needs nectar, and he’s found the perfect source. But will he be able to convince his new hive-mates? Only time will tell.

BeeBop’s shyness and determination make him an endearing and lovable character, and readers will enjoy the quirky “bee” puns and “bee” themed characters scattered throughout the story. The story also carries a strong message about the importance of believing in yourself and holding on to hope no matter what, making it a wonderful starting point for shared discussion with young readers. The sketchy black-and-white line drawings help readers see the world from a bee’s-eye perspective, and the text is just long and complex enough to challenge readers transitioning from picture-book to chapter-book reading.

BeeBop: The Honeybee Wannabee Hero is a sweet and instructive story, perfect for teaching about bullying, family, and belonging.
