    Written by Tommy Balaam

    Illustrated by Daniel Howard

    Age Range: 2-10

    Paperback: 32 pages

Publisher: Independently published (June 4, 2020)

    ISBN: 979-8649062473

What to expect: Space, Thunder, Fears, a Boy and His Dog

The first in a brand new series, Captain Fantastic: I’ve Got You is a big-hearted picture book in which a space captain comforts his space pet during a thunderstorm.

Captain Fantastic and his dog Winston are sailing through space in their good ship Zippity-Zap when they encounter a space storm. Afraid of the thunder, Winston retreats to a basket and hides under a blanket. In true friendship fashion, Captain Fantastic lovingly shares poignant anecdotes that demonstrate how the pair are never alone as long as they have each other. In doing so, he manages to ease his beloved companion’s fears, and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion that finds the pair curled up together under a blanket watching the lightning flash across the sky and through the stars.

Overall this is a sweet picture book in which the rhyming text flows. Alliterations like “galloping galaxy” and “astronomical asteroids” and the addition of onomatopoeia that leaps from the page in bold fonts enthusiastically catch the ear of the reader. The galactic illustrations are eye-catching with bright colors that pop against a black backdrop.

Captain Fantastic: I’ve Got You offers touching examples of empathy, friendship, and loyalty. This adventure-filled story will surely appeal to parents, grandparents, and caregivers looking for a loving reading experience to share with the kids in their lives.
