    Book HatchHatch!

    Written by Cassie Hoyt

    Illustrated by Amanda Crawford Brown

    Age Range: 2-5

    Paperback: 47 pages

Publisher: Cassie Hoyt (August 8, 2020)

    ISBN: 978-1735401102

What to expect: Baby Animals and Rhyming Text

“The egg is hatching, what will we see?” These are the words this charming picture book is founded upon. Each time they are repeated, young readers are introduced to a new baby animal: duckling, alligator, snakelet, baby bird, sea turtle, penguin, lizard, chick, spider, ostrich, and frog (tadpole).

Watercolor art fills the pages in beautiful ethereal washes and various other detailed watercolor techniques that add depth with varying hues and gradients. While the artwork differs somewhat, Hatch! is gently reminiscent of Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle’s classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? due to the repetitive, rhyming refrain that draws little ones in. Thanks to the details embedded into the artwork, children will surely enjoy guessing which animal is about to hatch based on the picture clues provided.

Hatch! provides a lovely introduction to the world of oviparous animals and lends itself well to a group or lap-time reading. It would make a great starting point for further exploration of these sweet creatures.
