    What to expect: Religion, Faith

I Have Faith, written by Davin Whitehurst and illustrated by Tiffany Brown, is a short picture book designed to help start discussions between children and their caregivers about faith in God. It is the story of one young boy, Danny, and his deep desire for a pet dog.

The book begins with a double-page spread with wide-open scenery and a pensive Danny introducing himself to the reader. He launches into the tale of how he learned to trust God and believe His word. Danny’s mother introduced him to faith by reading to him from the bible at bedtime each night. However, it is his longing for a dog and how a dog comes to be a part of his family that solidifies his faith and belief in a higher power—and the application that makes faith understandable at a day-to-day level for the reader. Note: Children that wish for a pet may have their desires strengthened.

At the end of Danny’s story there are clear, concise child/parent discussion questions such as: “What did Danny do to show he trusts God?” There is also a parent guide to help answer each question. The guide includes well-chosen scripture quotations taken from the New American Standard Bible or International Children’s Bible. The large white bubble writing really stands out against the paint on canvas illustrations, which is a nice draw for beginning readers. The artwork itself is gentle with soft muted colors and the characters have expressive faces.

All in all, this is a book with a specific purpose: introducing children to the concept of faith. Together, the author and illustrator complete the task. Parents looking for a way to introduce faith to children ages 4 through 8 will find I Have Faith to be a useful tool.

    About Davin Whitehurst

    Davin Whitehurst
    Davin Whitehurst

Davin lives in the beautiful high desert of Southern Arizona with his wife and son. He is releasing his first book “I Have Faith” in May of 2016 but has so many more that are in the making. The motivation behind the books are deeply rooted from in his own past. He is a living testimony of Proverbs 22:6. Growing up in Southwest Kansas and in a Christian household, he was trained up in the way he should go. By the time he became a teenager, Davin turned away from God and left the church. Fast forward into his late twenties and God brought him back with a powerful calling.

Jesus told the disciples to not hinder the children from going to him. Faith is such a vital part of a child’s life and as parents we can either hinder or develop our child’s faith. Whether in the form of speaking in a public setting, living a life of faith, or writing a book or novel; Davin is working to teach both parents and children practical ways that help us develop faith every day. Davin fully believes that God’s plan for our lives starts the day we are born. Everyday God wants us to hear from Him and develop a personal relationship that continues through eternity. As we listen to Him and know His will; faith always works and His promises come to pass, because we are releasing our faith in accordance with the will of God and not our own thoughts, feelings or reason. 1 John 5:14 says that the confidence we have is in knowing that we have asked according to HIS WILL. Davin has the hope that as an author the will of God is revealed to the reader and the listener; to know Him more and more every day.
