Melissa Guion’s first picture book, Baby Penguins Everywhere!, was selected for The Original Art 2012, an exhibition of the year’s best illustrated children’s books. Melissa swears she could draw baby penguins all day, but she may take a hiatus to do a book about her daughter’s guinea pigs. She lives with her family in Brooklyn, New York. I wanted to continue the story of the family from BABY PENGUINS EVERYWHERE! The babies are getting bigger and learning to do all the things that penguins do. It mirrors what’s going on with my own young daughter.
Favorite place to write …
On a train. But I’ll write anywhere.
Necessary writing/creativity tool …
Copious amounts of sleep.
Favorite bookshop …
There are so many great indies here in NY, I love them all and I wouldn’t want to slight any of them. Book Court and Greenlight are the closest to me and they’re wonderful.
Currently reading …
I have a bad habit of having several books going at once. I’m reading THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS by John Bellairs with my daughter. On my own I’m reading lots of books about Canada. I only recently became aware of Canada. Did you know it’s a real place? I’m reading CANADA by Richard Ford. I recently finished THE CURVE OF TIME by Wylie Blanchet, about British Columbia. And I’m also dipping into my friend Matt Cook’s newest book of poems, PROVING NOTHING TO ANYONE. That’s too many books at once.
All-time favorite children’s book you didn’t write…
Professor William Waterman Sherman, from William Pene du Bois’ THE TWENTY-ONE BALLOONS. He had an amazing hot air balloon. I wonder if it could carry both of us. I might be too much ballast.
