Written by Dr. Katina J. Currin

    Age Range: 6-10

    Paperback: 50 pages

Publisher: Lanier Press (June 14, 2019)

    ISBN: 978-1631835971

What to Expect: Siblings and Outpatient Surgery

Nancy, who suffers from chronic nosebleeds, is always in trouble with her older sister, 15-year-old Camille. Like a lot of younger sisters, Nancy is a curious girl and mischievously snoops through her sister’s things. She also suffers from nosebleeds and this, coupled with her penchant for snooping, has resulted in Nancy ruining several of Camille’s things. Not knowing what else to do, besides having Nancy hand over half of her allowance to Camille each week to pay for the damaged items, her mother and father set up a visit to their pediatrician, Dr. Wamba. Nancy is referred to an appropriately named specialist, Dr. Snout, to help with her frequent nosebleeds. At the specialist appointment, Nancy meets Nurse Nee Nee, who eases her fears and guides her through a required outpatient surgery. During the surgery and while under an anesthetic, Nancy has a dream that inspires her to respect her sister’s property. But will this newfound reverence be as lasting as her repaired nose?

While the underlying theme of sibling conflict peaks interest from start to finish, the author’s true calling shines through with an account of outpatient surgery that confidently works to put young children at ease. Dr. Katina J. Currin’s nursing experience in the nurse anesthesia, in which her skills were heavily utilized with pediatric patients, has allowed for a very realistic and believable encounter. The admirable Nurse Nee Nee is definitely the secret star of the story. The care she provides for Nancy is inspiring and commendable. Precocious readers will also enjoy the splatter of larger words included throughout; such as ailing, epistaxis, anesthetist, and procedure—there is a glossary included in the back matter to aid in vocabulary expansion and comprehension.

If you’re looking for a book to get your young reader’s nose into, this enjoyable and relatable chapter book will surely reassure families with school-aged children that may be preparing for a surgery.
