What to Expect: Imagination, friendship, overcoming fears, emotional reassurance, night-time concerns.
Oliver’s Shadow presents a satisfying exploration of childhood fears and misunderstandings through the adventures of young Oliver and his faithful teddy bear companion, Watson.
When Oliver notices his shadow vanishing as the lights go out, he immediately jumps to a touching conclusion—his shadow must be afraid of the dark! This misinterpretation becomes the perfect vehicle for the reader to explore fear of the dark in a way they will find both relatable and reassuring. Watson the bear adds a comforting dimension, highlighting how stuffed animals or loveys can help children navigate uncertainty. The search for Oliver’s missing shadow creates a gentle adventure story that moves with perfect pacing for bedtime reading.
While exploring the universal childhood experience of discovering how shadows work, author Knight-Yeager manages to weave in deeper themes about absence, permanence, and emotional comfort. The narrative structure feels circular and satisfying as it builds toward the reassuring revelation that just because you can’t see someone doesn’t mean they’re gone—a profound message delivered in child-friendly language that resonates on multiple levels. Richardson’s illustrations complement the accessible narrative by employing shadow play and contrasting light and dark elements that enhance the book’s thematic exploration. Together, the words and art capture the innocent logic of childhood, offering a gentle reminder that connections persist even when not visible.
Beyond being a charming bedtime story, Oliver’s Shadow would make a lovely addition to any young child’s library or as a thoughtful gift for children working through fears of the dark or separation anxiety.

About the Author
Martin Knight-Yeager is a Colorado native, father, and grandfather. Throughout his professional career, he integrated visual narratives into his work. Photography evolved into more digital content, with video and print production as a medium to bring marketing strategies to the forefront. As a parent, he raised his children with the joy of reading and storytelling. Creating Oliver’s Shadow is a new chapter, an extension of his experiences, and one he is grateful to share with your family. Today, Martin still calls Colorado home, enjoying the hiking and walking trails with his wife and a family of four-legged critters. Together, they foster lost and stray pups with a local K-9 rescue, working to find suitable families to adopt their foster dogs. Martin admits their latest pup, Watson, proves how easy it is to fail as a foster. Like Oliver’s “Watson,” this four-legged version has found a way into his life and heart.
