    Pairs of People: Book Cover

    Pairs of People

Written by Jeanne Shriver and Mark K. Shriver

    Illustrated by Laura Watson

    Ages 3-8 | 32 Pages

    Publisher: 4U2B Books & Media | ISBN-13: 9780829454857

What to Expect: Math, friendship, leadership, helping others

Combining lessons in service and citizenship with basic adding and multiplication knowledge and practice, Pairs of People helps readers think about their power to work for good in their communities.

The world is full of jobs that need doing and problems that need solving. When it snows, paths need clearing. After school, the classrooms and other school spaces need cleaning. When an animal runs into the road, traffic must be stopped so it can be rescued. And, when election time rolls around, people are needed to help spread the word. Luckily, something else the world is full of is helpers!

One pair of helpers is all it takes to clear snow. Three pairs of helpers have no trouble cleaning school floors. Six pairs of helpers have all the workforce needed to support civic connection. The more pairs of hands that volunteer for a job, the easier and quicker it gets done!

Following on from the award-winning 10 Hidden Heroes, Pairs of People not only models the use of mathematical skills in the real world but also uses the idea of service to illustrate what multiplication and addition look like in practice. Bright and colorful illustrations add to the overall cheerfulness of the volume, while spaces at the bottom of each page help readers associate the story with the relevant number sentences.

Pairs of People is a fun and uplifting approach to math—a fantastic follow-up to 10 Hidden Heroes, perfect for the classroom or home.
