Pirates and Spooks BewarePirates and Spooks, Beware!

    Written by Susan Weiner

    Illustrated by Bobbie Kogok

    Age Range: 7-12

Publisher: Belle Isle Books (October 31, 2018)

    ISBN: 978-1947860155

What to Expect: Pirates and Poetry

Although the pirate saying, “dead men tell no tales” may be true, living poet Susan Weiner definitely tells tales of the dead and creepy. Pirates and Spooks, Beware is her collection of fifteen lively and spine-tingling poems. Beginning with Stinky Pete and The Lady Pirate and ending with Hungry in the Jungle, Weiner sends readers sailing through the pages with her witty and wicked tummy-churning words. Each poem is a tale in its own right, featuring dreaded pirates (some stinky and some who battle in ball gowns), alligators, mummies, ocean monsters, mermaids, a ghostly hitchhiker, and a vegetarian cannibal. Bobbie Kogok’s enigmatic illustrations draw from the text to add vibrancy and visual context.

“Let lightning crack and thunder rumble away,

While storm clouds billow in purple and gray.

Merchants of the deep, tell your children to pray,

For I prowl past the tumult of the bay.”

This creative take on pirate lore will surely appeal to rascals and scallywags, who will enjoy attempting to keep a straight face while reading this suite of buoyant poetry.

    Susan Weiner

Susan Weiner loves children’s literature because rules do not apply and anything can and often does happen. This is her first book of children’s poetry but definitely not her last. Susan did graduate study at UCLA and hopes her field of Seventeenth-Century English History informs and shapes her fiction, especially her knowledge and understanding of any dreaded pirates!
