What to Expect: Rescue dogs, grief, life after death, friendship, resilience.
In this pet-themed picture book, readers will meet a cast of ghostly characters who are not even remotely scary.
When Lucy was alive, she was Sugar’s best friend—and a vital part of the whole family. Now Sugar is ill, Lucy is back, as a gentle ghost! What’s more, she has a secret to share with Sugar—gentle ghosts are all around, helping animals and humans through their troubles!
Lucy takes Sugar on a remarkable journey to see what it means to be a helpful ghost. They meet a monkey ghost who helps free trapped animals, a donkey ghost who brings comfort to those suffering in war zones, and even a shark ghost who helps fish caught in fishing nets. Lucy’s message is clear: sometimes life is hard, but where there is friendship, there will always be love and healing.
Sugar and her animal-ghost friends are caring, supportive, and enthusiastic, sure to appeal to any reader who loves animals. Their story offers readers hope that although animals and many humans experience hurt, sickness, and even death, there is still love and care all around us. Dream-like illustrations present the ghost helpers as glowing figures who move through ethereal scenery that blends reality and fantasy into a seamless whole. The text presents the story through short lines of dialogue between Sugar, Lucy, and the other animals, giving the reader the sense of listening in on a secret themselves.
Gentle and inspiring, The Adventures of Lucy Ghost and Sugar is perfect for readers who need reassurance that their pets will continue to bring and experience joy even after death.
