The Secret of Tu'ku's Peak: A Tortoise Odyssey: Book Cover

The Secret of Tu’ku’s Peak: A Tortoise Odyssey

    Written by Randy Stollar

    Illustrated by Daniel Ogletree

    Ages: 12+ | 262 Pages

Publisher: Dean and Sloane Publishing (2026) | ISBN: 979-8994717820

What to Expect: Daring to be different, journeys, self-discovery, Mojave landscape, animals, tradition.

Set in the stark desert beauty of the Mojave landscape, this epic story is both a gripping adventure quest and a thought-provoking journey of self-discovery.

Tyler isn’t like other tortoises. He knows he’s supposed to be independent, brave, and willing to stand alone—but Tyler dreams of a different path, one that allows him to see more of the world than tortoises are supposed to, and to walk through it with companions and friendship. Tyler has heard and memorized the ancient tortoise oracles that have kept tortoises safe for generations, but they are not enough to stop him longing to explore Tu’ku’s peak—a distant mountain he’s been warned against innumerable times, named after a tortoise whose story ended in tragedy.

Then, one day, he gets his chance, after wandering further from his home range than is wise. He only wants one glimpse—but the universe has other plans, and soon Tyler has been swept far from home, stranded in a harsh and dangerous landscape. To find his way back home to safety, he will need to test everything he thinks he knows about himself and the world around him. Luckily, there are plenty of wise animals along the way who can help.

Tyler is both courageous and determined, growing in resilience and confidence as his journey progresses. The friends and foes he meets are painted with both realism and sensitivity, embodying human emotions and philosophies while retaining the complexity of non-human needs and behaviors. Most strikingly, readers will walk with Tyler through a landscape depicted in loving detail, learning the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and challenges of the desert landscape through the eyes of the creatures who live there.

Tyler’s adventures as he faces hungry eagles, flood waters, sandstorms, and even cars to find his way back home will keep readers eagerly turning the pages, while quietly inviting them to think about the deeper questions of identity, tradition, community, and growth that the story poses.

Ideal for serious-minded readers with big questions about life, The Secret of Tu’ku’s Peak: A Tortoise Odyssey is uplifting, exciting, and inspiring.
