In The Day I Went to Space, author Bryson Reaume describes the zany space adventures that happen on an ordinary night to an ordinary boy with an extraordinary imagination.
The intrepid main character has just settled in for a night’s well-deserved rest when he hears some strange noises. To his surprise, his bed has turned into a space ship and he is hurtling through outer space to an unknown planet. Upon arrival, he is informed that he has been enlisted in a program to become a space cadet. Luckily, his best friend is also there so he happily joins the rest of the trainees.
They are taught how to fly and fix space ships. They learn alien languages, culinary tastes and customs. They travel to the farthest reaches of the universe, meeting all sorts of interesting aliens along the way.
“Cute little beings that could read your thoughts,
And big, loud, beeping alien robots.
Some had colorful ears and rather large noses.
Others were small, with arms like hoses.”
Readers will be delighted by the cadence and rhyming scheme of the story. The subtle phrasing conveys big emotions and ideas while keeping even the youngest readers enthralled. The Day I Went to Space is a perfect story to read aloud to even the youngest readers and the quirky illustrations will surely spark imaginative conversations about outer space, aliens and all manner of things.
