Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown

Written by Danii Oliver and Ivy Braithwaite

    Illustrated by Danii Oliver

    Ages: 4-6 | 40 Pages

Publisher: KIDO Family Ranch Publishing  (2025) | ISBN: 9798861725828

What to Expect: Diversity, Friendship, Acceptance, Adventure, and Self-discovery

First in a series of unschooling stories, Venturing into the Unknown chronicles a family’s courageous leap away from conventional city life into a realm of exploration and growth through hands-on learning.

When the family in this story moves from New York City to rural Texas, they embark on a new chapter of their lives. The familiar dark streets, trash, and loud city noises are replaced by wide open spaces brimming with new discoveries to explore! As Mom and Dad immerse themselves in learning how to build, grow food, and take care of the family in their new home, the children are not left behind. They learn from everything around them—the animals they care for, the plants they grow, and even the color of the sky above and the stars that light it up. With a steadfast commitment to the philosophy of unschooling, the family is on a journey of continuous learning and growth!

Each page of the book showcases the family learning from a new experience, from planting a garden to raising rabbits. The cheerful pencil and ink artwork not only suggest the gentle, soothing atmosphere of the countryside but also draw readers’ attention to the activity from which learning emerges. Importantly, the narrative highlights the parents’ active role in their children’s education, emphasizing that learning is a shared and mutual activity in the unschooling process.

Venturing into the Unknown is designed to get readers excited about unschooling and the adventures they can have in their own learning.
