What to expect: Pirates, Teamwork, Imagination, Fears, Reading, Books
In Carole P. Roman’s fifth installment of her award-winning Captain No Beard series, The Treasure of Snake Island, the crew of the Flying Dragon discovers the power of reading.
Polly the parrot is a smart bird and, because of knowledge learned from a book, she is able to identify that a storm is brewing. She squawks:
“Red sky at night, sailors delight;
Red sky morning; sailors take warning.”
The crew work together to battle the storm and when the sea becomes “smooth as glass,” like all good pirates, they head off on a treasure hunting adventure. Using a map and looking for the x that marks the spot, they seek out the treasure on Snake Island and teamwork falls into place as fears of snakes are faced. On their journey, a child-centric conversation takes place about all of the great things that can be learned from books, so when they open the treasure box and discover it is full of books the crew feel deeply rewarded for all of their digging. While Roman’s storytelling does a really nice job showcasing the knowledge that can be gained from reading books and that there are books to suit every interest, it is the underlying message and actual reading of this book that is of the most significance: reading is fun!
This is an adventurous read-aloud tale that is sure to be a hit with preschoolers and kindergartners that love adventure, treasure hunts and pirates. And parents will certainly embrace Roman’s efforts for priming kids for a lifetime of reading—reading for knowledge and reading for pleasure. Love that!
