What to expect: Fantasy, Magic, Action, and Dragons
The Boy with the Sword is the follow-up novel to Dragon Run.
Dead dragons are littered across the land. Al’s home—the city and its castle—is now controlled by the magically powerful Magister Trejir—one of the few magisters remaining after the Dragon War. In a world that believes that bloodlines should be kept pure, especially for “high-ranking” humans, Al has difficulty returning home with his rank of zero. Some magisters kill zeros. Plus, nobody is sure if it’s good the dragons are dead, for which Al is accountable. Al’s dad appears to have disowned him, and his mother is a hostage to Trejir. Al finds himself in action-packed peril as he tries desperately to find his mother. It will be harder to find her than he realizes and he will discover that there is more on the line than meets the eye.
Readers that enjoy action will gladly travel through this fantasy realm with the sword-wielding Al as he learns to manage his new-found powers and strength. This well-built world takes the reader through catacombs, water ducts, and stone walls, as Al encounters an intriguing lot of characters, making exciting alliances with unlikely types. Readers will readily grip onto the suspenseful storyline as they wonder if Al will make it to the end alive.
“It is not stupid to stand in the face of certain defeat. Standing gives hope to those who cannot.”
Author Patrick Matthews is also a game designer, and it shows in the well-designed, high-fantasy world he has created. The map included in the book is a bonus.
