What to Expect: Family, new baby, adapting to change, pets

In this tongue-in-cheek picture book, the arrival of a new baby takes on the grandeur of a royal drama, as seen through the eyes of the pampered family pet.

Sloane (the dog) loves being the sole monarch in her kingdom (house). She has her subjects (human owners) bring her food, clean up after her, and generally cater to her every whim. Then, something unexpected happens—Sloane is told she will have to share her crown with a new prince (baby) in the family! Will the prince understand that she is still the top dog? Sloane may have to make some adjustments to her lifestyle and expectations to accommodate this new member of the family. Still, when all is said and done, Sloane has to admit that sharing the crown is really not so bad.

From this dogs-eye perspective, readers get a sympathetic glimpse at the complicated emotions and changes they will have to cope with when the arrival of a new family member introduces change and demands compromise. Shaun Post’s bold, primary-color illustrations humorously let readers into the secret that Sloane is, in fact, a pet dog, inviting them to laugh at the egotism they might otherwise give in to themselves. At the same time, the simple rhyming text keeps the story accessible to even beginner readers.

Sloane Rules! is a witty take on the theme of new siblings, great for helping young readers prepare for this significant change in their lives.
