What to expect: Mexico, Places, Spanish words, Culture

Hola! Welcome to Mexico, book one in this new educational and enlightening series where award-winning author Carole P. Roman (Captain No Beard series) introduces young children to cultures around the world by sharing details on places, foods, sports, language and more.

From one child to another, the young narrators, a chico and a chica, talk to readers and listeners about what they could expect if they lived in Mexico. Beginning with an illustration of a globe to show the location of Mexico, the narrators move through a tour of the country in clear and simple sentences. Points of interest include the Palacio de Bella Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) and Chichen Itza (a Mayan temple shaped like a pyramid). Language is discussed and common words are shared: Mommy/Mama, Daddy/Papa, money/peso. A sampling of food is showcased and described—delicious tamale. Sports and holidays and school are discussed as the narrators engage the readers and listeners by asking questions and prompting guesses. An appendix offers a list of the Spanish words used throughout the book, complete with correct pronunciation. The color illustrations work hard to convey the colors of the areas visited. As a former social studies teacher, Roman touches on topics that are important and relatable to children and has written a well-rounded introduction perfect for story time listeners through beginner readers.

Traveling to Mexico? Sí, this is for you. Mexican heritage? Sí, this is for you. Looking for ways to expand your child’s understanding of the world around them? Sí, this is for you. Want to raise children who appreciate diversity? Sí, this is for you. If You Were Me and Lived in … Mexico … is simple in language and rich in culture. Muy bueno!
