Our beagle somehow opened the gate to the kitchen and got into the tall waste paper basket. Everything from empty ice cream containers to any container with food remnants was strewn across the floor in 3 rooms. Returning from work that day was quite a surprise. The beagle of course was laying on her chair looking at us all cuddly like she was innocent. The basket is now behind a closed door.

We recently rescued Jax, a Mountain Feist and he is just a blast and super cute. He loves to hug us by standing on his back legs and wrapping his front paws around your neck. He is just the best 😉 My cat Shadow is just a lover and loves snuggling and having his belly rubbed.

The cat liked to drink from a teacup on the edge of the bathtub. One time, the tub was full and the cat did not appreciate the dunking.

We are a family of five cats right now. The mom cat, Sylvie, is full of attitude at home. A few years ago she spent a couple of weeks at the vet when she was suddenly unwilling/unable to eat. I had to drive down to attempt to feed her and give her her breathing treatments twice a day, while she received medication and supplemental nutrition and testing from the staff. Also, apparently, lots of TLC. They love her at the vet office, and whenever we return, or bring in any of our other pets (including her four children), the staff fawns over our “sweet Sylvie”. Our family has to wonder who they are talking about–we love Sylvie, but at home she is anything but “sweet”.

We had a black cat, a sweet old fellow, who used to meow “Hellooo”, sounding just like a spooky greeting. We had to warn visitors about this, because he would sometimes fall asleep in the guest room and then wake them in the middle of the night with this greeting. Could be kind of scary if you weren’t expecting it.

Well, today our goat and I had a lively “discussion” as to whether he should remove his head and shoulders from the wrong side of the fence and get back where he belongs. I called his name, said, “No! Get back!” and he bleated back to me. I repeated my stern instruction and he hollered back. This went on five times, back and forth, until he gave in and wandered over to join the horses, grumbling. Naughty, funny old Oscar, certain that the grass is greener on the other side and that I am very mean.

My mom liked to tell the story of the day our family went to Disneyland–a much-anticipated event, a very big deal–and returned home very late, very tired, to find our two dogs waiting on our front porch, as exhausted and happy as we were–NOT in the backyard/garage where they belonged. Apparently they had waited until we left and then done something they had never done before and escaped from our yard and enjoyed a day on the run, returning home before we did and waiting for us without any guilt at all.

Our 1st black lab was a ‘trash dog’. He would always get into the trash! So we ended up putting the kitchen trash bin on the landing between our kitchen (which has a door we could close) and the basement stairs (about a dozen steps). Well, one day I forgot to close that kitchen door and came home to chewed up trash ALL the way down my basement steps! Never made that mistake again!

We have a cat who receives a breathing treatment every night, along with three oral meds. Every night she makes us wait until she decides she is ready for her treatment, then puts on a very dramatic show about how put out she is to go through the whole ordeal, including lots of mewing and complaining with her mask on and then stomping away after the treatment, only to come right back and snuggle up. But the thing is, if she didn’t want to take her meds and have her treatment she could just stay away, under the bed or on top of the book case. She knows it makes her feel better and she shows up every night. It’s all a big show.

The most mischievous thing our cat Buckwheat used to do was nag our dad to come to bed at the bedtime she designated: 11:30 pm, on the nose, every night. Nevermind that he was a night owl, whose chosen bedtime would have been three hours later than that. Buckwheat got lonely for him at 11:30 and it was then that she rousted him out and nagged him until he toddled off to bed. Buckwheat was tiny–about six pounds–and my dad followed her commands like she was a police canine officer.
