    Cody's Whisper: Book Cover

    Cody’s Whisper

    Written by Malia Grace

    Illustrated by Lauren Elise Reeves

    Ages: 5-10 | 32 Pages

    Publisher: Ingram Spark (2025) | ISBN: 979-8992880045

What to Expect: Shyness, belonging, sensory processing sensitivity, social emotional learning, nature.

In the rapidly changing modern world, social and emotional resilience are increasingly important for young children to learn. And what better way to learn about them than through stories? In this picture book fable, readers will learn and grow alongside a main character who is gentle and shy but not afraid to seek help for the challenges that he faces.

Cody the Coyote is quiet, gentle, and shy—and that means he gets teased all the time by his loud, outgoing classmates, who don’t understand why he feels overwhelmed by their noise. Cody doesn’t feel like he will ever fit in, so he leaves school and wanders away into the forest, hoping nature will share some of her wisdom with him.

After sharing his problems with the Moon, Sun, Creek, Tree, Fox, Owl, Wolf, Butterfly, and Deer, and hearing their advice, Cody discovers something extraordinary—he’s perfect just as he is, and the power to cope with life’s difficulties has been inside him all along! When Cody returns to school, the teasing doesn’t stop—but now Cody has the strength and wisdom to grow despite it.

Through Cody’s dialogue with nature, readers will learn about bravery, patience, flexibility, kindness, and other essential characteristics they can cultivate to help them navigate a complex emotional environment. The cartoon artwork is filled with realistic details drawn from the natural world, helping readers see the truths Cody discovers as tangible and real in their own lives.

Whether shared in a classroom or read aloud at home, this picture book works well as a catalyst for opening meaningful discussions about thriving in our society as a quiet soul, inspiring children to navigate the world with resilience and self-acceptance.
