    A Reel Cool Summer

    Written by Martha Rodriguez

    Illustrated by Joey Rodriguez

    Ages 5-9 | 32 Pages

Publisher: Martha Rodriguez (December 20, 2011)

    What to Expect: Adventure

A Reel Cool Summer has all the ingredients for a great movie adventure: It’s the hottest, most boring day of summer vacation! It’s so hot and boring, it feels like you’re in a mall that’s made of really, really hot lava! Confused? That’s okay. It will all make sense once you meet Joey, Danny and Jacqui. Will the three siblings find a way to cool down? Can they turn this boring day around? Will aliens take over the world? Wait. What? A Reel Cool Summer has all the ingredients for a great movie adventure: a pirate, a princess, a prize and a pig (well, two pigs. well, actually, two guinea pigs)!

    About the Author

Martha Rodriguez is a wife and mother of three. Like most moms, she has had many years of experience answering the question, “We’re bored, what can we do?” One answer to that question brought about the true story behind A Reel Cool Summer, a wacky and colorful book about three kids using their imagination and creativity to turn a boring, hot day into a real, or reel, cool one! This is Martha’s first children’s picture book. She created her own publishing company, Read To Me Publishing, LLC and is working on a second book featuring the three siblings. Her son, Joey, who is the real Joey in the story, created the bright and colorful illustrations for the book. She has been a volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor with Literacy Volunteers of Leon County (Tallahassee, FL) and served as a member of its Board of Directors from 2008-2011. Martha was born in Havana, Cuba and emigrated to the United States, with her parents, at the age of three.

I know the mother of this mother/son team and am very excited for her! She is a very talented and energetic woman, and a strong advocate for literacy, so I’m not surprised to see that she has now tried her hand at writing a children’s book. I also know that her son is a talented artist and this must be very exciting for him as well. I can’t wait to read the book! Congratulations Martha & Joey!

This book sounds like a fun one to read to my third graders. Would be a great pre-write activity to get the students thinking about how they spent their summer and then to share in writing activity.

Hi Martha! How exciting for you! Thank you for sharing:-)
