Sofie the squirrel is throwing a tea party in her cozy treehouse, and she’s determined to invite every animal she knows. One by one, though, her friends turn her down—each for a reason that says more about who they are than about Sofie herself. Will anyone show up to share her acorns and her joy?
With each turn of the page, a repeating pattern emerges (invite, decline, and reason), giving young readers a predictable rhythm to latch onto—a pattern that works well for both read-alouds and early independent reading. As every animal refuses Sofie’s invite, the reason is clear and concrete (Badger the raccoon is a no because he only plays at night. Lily the Frog only plays in water. Foxy the fox doesn’t like tea or parties. And so on.), and what could be a repetitive list of rejections becomes a gentle lesson in individuality. Sofie’s patient optimism is finally rewarded with Chip the chipmunk’s enthusiastic yes, providing a satisfying climax.
Adding to the story’s warmth are Jeremy Vickneswaran’s mixed-media illustrations that blend digital renderings with pencil work. The pencil texture adds a handmade softness and keeps the animal characters feeling approachable, even during their well-mannered refusals.

Carrie and Corey Webber’s love of storytelling has ties to their own memories of favorite books as children, including one about little critters that lived inside a treehouse.
They believe that a great book is one that shares a lesson through storytelling. They hope their young readers come away from their story understanding the foundation of friendship and that this stays with them long after the book is closed.
When they aren’t writing, Carrie and Corey love spending time with their family and friends, playing games, and enjoying music, boating, and camping. They live with their two dogs in southeast Michigan. Sofie Finds a Best Friend is their debut picture book.
