Book Mandy${2}s Pet ShopMandy’s Pet Shop: A Pet Shop for Monsters

Written by Zack Shada and D.C. Cody

    Illustrated by Nathan Monção

    Age Range: 3-7

    Hardcover: 30 pages

    Publisher: Mandy (July 23, 2020)

    ISBN: 978-1735379517

What to expect: Rhyming Book, Monsters, and Pets

In Mandy’s Pet Shop: A Pet Shop for Monsters, a young boy and his mother enter a pet shop with the hopes of bringing home a regular pet, but they are in for a little surprise. As the title of this picture book suggests, this is a shop filled with monsters. Mandy, the relaxed and happy store owner, is ready to pair them with the perfect monster. She’s got big ones, blue ones, cats with nine eyes, frogs with three heads, and even a gloppy pile of mud that can talk. Just as Decker, the young boy, begins to feel frazzled, he discovers that there may be a perfect pet for him in Mandy’s store after all.

“This is too much! You don’t understand!

I don’t want some monster from some crazy land!

I just want a pet, like a fish or a dog.

    Not a Tug-a-Saurus or a three-headed frog!”

The authors’ peppy and engaging rhyming text, combined with the bright, vibrant, and whacky illustrations, lead to a fun reading experience with a hidden message: sometimes the unexpected and the different can be just the ticket. The artwork, created with watercolors and Adobe Illustrator, will have kiddos lingering on the pages to check out the array of lovable monsters with details such as large doe-like eyes or many heads with extra hats upon them.

Mandy’s Pet Shop: A Pet Shop for Monsters is a zany, zippy picture book bound to amuse readers and encourage them to keep an open mind.

    About the Authors

Zack ShadaD.C. Cody was born and raised in Billings, MT. After moving to Los Angeles, he was offered an athletic scholarship for football. But he chose a path in the arts, favoring writing and acting instead. He has been featured in television shows such as Glee and 90210. He has also voiced countless characters in video games and animation. As a writer, he has always strived to write compelling works geared toward children and young adults. Instead of chasing what is conventional, he chooses to let inspiration guide him towards each new artistic endeavor.

As a writer, director, and actor, Zack Shada has appeared in films and television such as Space Chimps, Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Wizards of Waverly Place, and countless others. His short films and music videos have also garnered multiple awards and accolades. But he mainly views himself as a writer, having written across multiple mediums, such as books, television, and film. Whimsical and imaginative, Zack’s written works often embody his love of fairytales, distant lands, and of course… monsters.
