    The Wolf Cub: book cover

    The Wolf Cub

    Written by Alison Bellringer

    Ages: 8+ | 68 Pages

    Publisher: Austin Macauley Publishers (2024) | ISBN-13: 9781035837021

What to Expect: Friendship, animals, nature, and poverty.

Reminiscent of old fairy tales, The Wolf Cub is about trust, nurturing, and caring for those around us.

Lewis spends a lot of his time in the woods, entertaining himself by chatting to the animals of the forest while his seamstress mother struggles to make ends meet. Whether it’s the squirrels, the rabbits, the birds, or the mice, all the animals gather around to chat when Lewis settles himself down by the watering hole. Then, one day, a different sort of animal stops at the watering hole—a wolf! It’s a mother wolf, and she is hurt—and to Lewis’ surprise, she seems to want him to look after her cub. For Lewis, it’s like a dream come true—a special companion to spend his lonely days with. But Lewis’ mother is not so sure—what will happen when the cub grows up?

A kind, sensitive, and curious protagonist, Lewis is the perfect hero for a story about animal friendships. Although the narrative is broken into chapters, the story is short and straightforward, easy for readers new to chapter-book reading to follow along with and has plenty of challenging vocabulary to help them build their literacy skills. Most importantly, the story models kindness and acceptance on every page, assisting readers to imagine a world in which real-life problems can have happy—and even magical—endings.

The Wolf Cub is a gentle, sweet story about friendship and kindness, great for teaching readers about community and care.
