Turn This Book Into a Beehive CoverTurn This Book into a Beehive!

    Written by Lynn Brunelle

    Illustrated by Anna-Maria Jung

    Age Range: 8-12

    Publisher: Workman (2018)

    ISBN: 978-1-5235-0141-0

What to Expect: Science, Nature, Interactive.

Who doesn’t love bees – or at least honey … or, well, having plants on our planet? Turn This Book Into A Beehive celebrates the little-known mason bee—a non-stinging native bee with 100 times the pollinating power of the better-known honeybee. Packed with interactive activities and carefully researched detail, this book will help the budding (no pun intended) apiarist understand the vital part that all bees play in nature.

There is no getting around the fact that the coolest part of this book is its cover—the removable dust jacket comes off and, together with the tear-away paper sheets that roll into nesting tubes, turns into your very own mason bee hive. To help readers populate their real-live hive the book is bursting with practice bee advice, including information about mason bee friendly gardens for the different zones of the United States, eco-friendly ways of battling the mason bee’s foes in the insect world, and even some gentle advice on what to do if you get stung by a bee. Colorful, cartoon-style illustrations walk the reader through the life-cycle of the bee, as its role in a thriving eco-system, and activities such as building your own wax cells and trying out bee language help readers to imagine what it is like to be a bee. This book is fun, informative, and—most importantly of all—a wonderful, practical, hands-on guide to supporting these amazing creatures.
