    Ginger’s Courage

    Written by Lynsey Patterson

    Illustrated by Angela Perrini

    Ages: 4-6 | 18 Pages

Publisher: Little Steps Publishing (2025) | ISBN: 978-1915641366

What to Expect: Animals, football, injury, disability, resilience, positivity.

You can’t go wrong with a story that includes both a super cute canine protagonist and lots of football fun!

Ginger the dog loves playing with her ball—all day, every day, she spends her time kicking and chasing her ball. Ginger is an excellent player, and her whole life revolves around her ball. Then, one day, Ginger is less careful than she should be and chases her ball out into the moving traffic! Ginger is lucky to be alive, but she’s lost one of her legs and can no longer play as she used to. Sad and frightened that she can never be the same again, Ginger retreats indoors and hides—until a few caring friends show her that with determination, she can get outside and have fun again!

Ginger is feisty, vivacious, and passionate, and readers are sure to love the fact that even her serious injury can’t keep her down for long. The lively, full-spread illustrations are as dynamic as Ginger herself, with soft colors subtly signaling Ginger’s changing emotions to the reader. The story ends with a positive note, not just about Ginger’s triumph over adversity, but also more generally with a message that reframes disability as a different ability, inspiring hope and a positive outlook.

Sweet, insightful, and uplifting, Ginger’s Courage is perfect for educating young readers about injury, resilience, and acceptance.

    About the Author

Lynsey Patterson grew up in the beautiful town of Ballymena in Northern Ireland, the birthplace of many notable writers and artists. Lynsey, like many children of her time, found solace in the local library. Her love for all things writing has led Lynsey to write portfolios of poetry and fiction, as well as numerous non-fiction articles, which have been published in various magazines. Lynsey’s first children’s book, Ginger’s Courage, was inspired by her four adopted fur babies, all with different levels of trauma and disability. Ginger’s Courage is based on true events and is due to be released later this year. Lynsey’s background is in education with a passion for wellbeing and counselling. Lynsey has lived in the Northern Territory, Australia, for the past 16 years and is now writing her second children’s book, which is the sequel to Ginger’s Courage.
