If You Were Me and Lived in...Greece- A Child's Introduction to Culture Around the WorldIf You Were Me and Lived in … Greece: A Child’s Introduction to Cultures Around the World

    By Carole P. Roman

    Paperback: 24 pages

    Age Range: 5-8

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (September 23, 2014)

    ISBN-13: 978-1497526181

What to expect: Greece, Places, Language, Food, Culture, Sports

Eleventh in her children’s cultural series, Carol P. Roman’s If You Were Me and Lived in … Greece: A Child’s Introduction to Cultures Around the World takes her young readers to Southern Europe and the tiny island of Greece. Here readers are introduced to basic western civilization concepts of democracy along with important philosophers, and historical places.

In the first few pages, students will quickly learn Greece’s capital Athens is known as “…the cradle of western civilization…” and the birth of democracy. They are familiarized with the famous philosophers Plato and Aristotle, who were both influential in the development of western thought.

Students will then find key facts about Greece such as their monetary system and the Feast of St. Basil, one of Greece’s important holidays. Any sports loving student will certainly enjoy Roman’s page on the birthplace of the world’s Olympic Games and why they are called the Olympics.

In the same manner as other books in this series, each page highlights basic identifications of some common conversational words with a phonetic pronunciation key following each Greek word. Children’s and familial names, toys, and favorite foods are incorporated and help student’s easily visualize the words and their corresponding object. The glossary is diverse with three pages of pronunciations and would definitely help a student reporting on Greece.

As with the other books in this series, the facts presented along with Roman’s simplistic format are a great stepping off point for cultural dialogues ranging from traditions, western civilization, and home life in Greece to name a few. If You Were Me and Lived in Greece: A Child’s Introduction to Cultures Around the World is a great choice for elementary grade readers.
