Opal Opossum loves the Moonlight Marauders’ concert so much that she wishes she had a special talent she could use to make others happy, too. Her wish comes unexpectedly true that very night, when she is visited by a mysterious meteor strike and an even more mysterious glowing green taco. She ignores the meteor and eats the taco—and wakes up flowing green, feeling very peculiar, and in possession of some awesome new superpowers. With her laser eyes, she saves her friend from the unwanted attentions of Cecil the snake, and with her new and improved tail and pouch, she’s able to save some gophers and their pizza from a pair of greedy raccoon twins. Then, with her two friends Albin and Essie taking point as her trusty sidekicks, she not only saves some baby ducklings—she also convinces Cecil and the raccoons to help! Opal is definitely superhero material now—but why she’s been chosen for these gifts is still a bit of a mystery…
Opal is endearingly impulsive and humble, ready to help wherever she can but not above admitting she doesn’t have all the answers and skills. The story is told through snappy, tongue-in-cheek dialogue that will have readers in fits of giggles, while the comic-book-style digital illustrations are bold and lively, artfully situating Opal’s heroics within a larger picture of teamwork and cooperation with her friends. The story is organized into short chapters, each of which begins with a fact page about the animals or scientific ideas readers will find in the chapter, and each of which ends with a reminder to stretch, breathe, fidget, and otherwise reground before reading on. A glossary at the end of the book supports readers in building literacy, while space for predictions about future stories and imaginings about their own superpowers encourages readers to engage critically with what they’ve read.
